Six Important Things You Should Know About Online Casino Fairness and Security

New to gambling and online casinos? You are in the right page.

If you are new to gambling and online casinos, then you are in the right page. It is crucial for you to be aware of the security and fairness of any online casino you will be playing on. Here are six important safeguards you should look for before creating an account and depositing money:

1. Read the Customer Reviews

Research on what others think about the casino you’re looking to play on, it’s what most people do as well, newbie or not. Customer reviews (also called customer ratings) will give you an understanding of how online casinos treat their players.

Take note of these ‘bad’ signs, and save yourself from future headaches:

  1. Closing player accounts unreasonably
  2. Canceling player winnings
  3. Confiscating player winnings
  4. Slow to process winnings
  5. Hidden terms and conditions
  6. Bad customer services experience

The first 3 signs are probably the worst, particularly if there was no explanation from the casino. It takes a lot for players to come out and spend time giving a bad review, so if you come across any of those negative reviews, they must have had an awful experience.

Poor customer service is what we dislike the most, it’s disappointing when customer service is not helpful, passes you around, or not responding at all! Surely you’ve experienced this before with other services and ended up ruining your day and wasting your time!

When an online casino is slow to pay, it’s a sign of poor management. Reasons could be bottle necks in the payment process and/or they’re struggling financially. Either way, it’s best to avoid them at all!

Hidden T&Cs are just as bad as hidden fees. Imagine signing a car loan with irresistible perks, only to find out it’s riddled with hidden fees. Infuriating! So keep a look out for complaints about this, you’ll thank yourself later.

2. Data Encryption

Online casinos, or any businesses that takes personal and financial data, must use 128 or 256-bit encryption. Legitimate casinos often make sure you know about this, however if it’s not explicitly displayed on their site, it’s in their data security page.

Basically, the encryption turns your personal data into strings of secured codes as it passes through the payment gateway. You should also take note of payment gateways your casino is partnered with. If they don’t sound familiar or you’ve heard bad press in the past, then you might want to think twice before depositing any money or entering any financial data.

3. Random Number Generators (RNG)

Let’s touch on the technical side of things. RNG is a computer program designed to generate a sequence of numbers (or symbols) at random.

There are several types of RNGs, online casinos use what’s called a pseudo random number generator (PRNG). PRNG are not truly random though, it’s determined by an initial value called ‘seed value,’ paired with an algorithm. No one knows the seed value or the algorithm to prevent hacks, as it’s been done before (see: Hot Lotto fraud scandal)!

We won’t dive in too deep for now, what’s important is for you to know whether the online casino you will be playing on has this implemented.

Reputable online casinos are tested and evaluated by third party software companies like Technical Systems Testing (TST). Once passed, they receive a badge and certificate that you should be able to spot somewhere on their website—if not, feel free to ask their customer services about it.

4. Privacy Policies

Privacy policies are the online casino’s statement on what they intend to collect from you and how they plan to use your personal details, should you decide to sign up. Some businesses will sell information such as your name, contact details, or even behavioral patterns to other companies. If you suddenly receive cold calls or messages from advertisers, your information may have been sold to other businesses.

So, it is important for you to read the privacy policy to determine whether you are comfortable giving your details. You can also save a copy of the privacy policy for future reference.

The Privacy Policy document is located at the bottom of a company’s website. Feel free to request a copy from customer services if you’re unable to find it.

5. Licenses

Gaming authorities, regulators, and commissions play an important role in the online gaming world. They issue a ‘license to operate’ to the casinos under strict compliance. They also serve as the governing body for player concerns and they conduct investigations, so it pays to know if the online casino you are interested in has a valid license to operate.

These licensing bodies regularly audit online casinos, if any of the casinos are found to be guilty of any wrongdoings they are either fined, get suspended, or their license to operate is revoked.

Most online casinos will post their license number and the licensing body that issued the license. Feel free to double check the validity of their license by visiting the licensing body’s official website. The United Kingdom, Malta, and Isle of Man (IOM) are three of the most highly regarded licensing bodies out there.

6. Casino Terms of Use

Online casinos have what they call ‘General Terms and Conditions.’ It encompasses all the terms of their entire operation, including all their promotions. In fact, you may have noticed that while a promotion may have a separate T&C, there’s almost always a final line stating General Terms and Conditions Apply. Terms that were not mentioned in the promo T&Cs will be in the General T&Cs so give that a look as well.

As with the Privacy Policy, it pays to read through the General T&Cs, and keep a copy, in case sudden changes were made to the document.
